Why the Requirement of Waterproof Paint for Walls Should not be Ignored?
Waterproofing paint for walls is required for several reasons but the primary reason is structural damage. Water intrusion causes corrosion to the embedded steel and concrete damage. Concrete is a porous material and water can pass through it by capillary action, water vapor gradient, and majorly due to hydrostatic pressure. To eliminate deterioration to the concrete and the building structure, Weatherproof paint, and waterproofing paint for walls are required. As otherwise, water can enter pores and cracks of the surface or if the joint installation and structural design are not proper and lead to structural defects.
The primary composition of the concrete makes it vulnerable to chemicals so it has characteristics such as permeability, alkalinity, and reactivity. Permeability to liquids and gasses varies with the type of concrete used to build the structure and increases fast if the water-cement ratio increases fast with decreasing moisture-curing time. Water and other fluids’ penetration is sometimes caused by their reaction with cement and steel embedded in the joints of the structure. The alkalinity of the cement also causes it to deteriorate and disintegrate at a rapid pace because alkaline hydrated cement binder reacts with acidic substances and that can occur on the interior as well as exterior surfaces of the building. Alkali–aggressive reaction can be the most harmful thing to the concrete as it results in overall destruction and this happens because the dissolved substances flow through the concrete and deposit at the surface where evaporation happens. That is why weatherproof paint is a must for any building structure.
Not only water and moisture but there are several other chemicals as well that are destructive to concrete. And these types of chemicals are often found in the soil and surrounding areas of a building structure if the location is not ideal for the building or the building structure is below grade. In such a situation it becomes the responsibility of the engineer and designer to inspect the soil and accordingly design the weatherproofing system and waterproofing paint for walls. Otherwise, the weatherproof paint and material won’t be able to protect the building. Because of the more destructive chemicals are present in the soil and water such as aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate, ammonium chloride, ammonia vapors, ammonium sulfate, ferric sulfide, and ferrous sulfate, it will disintegrate the concrete and then steel in just a few years.
So, weatherproofing as well as waterproofing, are required at the surface of the concrete structures to keep the water penetration and moisture out of the facility. It is the waterproofing paint for walls and weatherproof paint that protect the concrete as well as embedded steel in the structure. So, to maintain the integrity of the building structure, make sure it is properly waterproofed.
