[INSERT HOW-TO PAINT A HONEYCOMB VIDEO]
There’s much more to the transformative power of paint than simply using one color to paint a room. To make a unique style statement in your home, why not create your own feature wall using a honeycomb motif? Inspired by Spiced Honey, the Dulux Colour of the Year 2019, it’s easier than you might think!
We’ll take you through the kit you’ll need and give you step-by-step instructions on achieving the perfect finish. But don’t be afraid to personalize the idea, you could paint your hexagons up high, down low, clustered around a key piece of furniture to zone your space or scattered at random. The options are endless…
You’ll need:
- A tin of each of your chosen paint colors
We’ve used:
E4.22.49 / 00YY 26/220
Q9.23.29 / 50BG 11/123
L8.04.50 / 10GG 26/046
- Paint rollers, standard and small
- Paint tray
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Plain card or paper
- Ruler
- Spirit level
- Masking tape
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
Step 1: Create your base
For best results start with a freshly painted wall. Not sure which shade to choose? See instantly how the latest Colour of the Year 2019 palettes could look on your wall with the free Dulux Visualizer app [LINK: https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/articles/the-dulux-visualizer-app]. Once you’ve applied your new background color and the paint is completely dry, you’re ready to create your shapes.
Step 2: Create a base-line
Decide where your shapes will be and create a base-line for them using masking tape and a spirit-level.
Step 3: All angles
Using your ruler draw an equilateral triangle – the width will be half the width of your final shape – and cut it out.
Step 4: Build your template
Use your triangle as a template to draw a six-triangle hexagon. Duplicate this shape for as many honeycomb hexagons as you will need.
Step 5: Mask out your shapes
Using a tab of masking tape, arrange these hexagons along your base line, spaced as you like. Completely mask around the outer edge of each hexagon, then remove the cardboard shape, creating a stencil. Repeat with a smaller inner hexagon if you wish to create outlines rather than solid shapes.
Step 6: Pop on the paint
Using a small roller or brush, fill in the shapes with the paint colors of your choice.
Step 7: Peel to reveal
While the paint is still a little wet, remove the tape to reveal your shapes!
